1000 Artist Journal Pages

I created this topic by mistake trying to publish something to my blog page. I couldn't delete the post, so figured I would post a picture of the cover of new book "1000 Artist Journal Pages". Arlee and I have one of our pages published in the book. Mine is on page 221. It is from the journal page exchange that I did with Arlee and others. My page lives in Norway. I brought the book to show and tell at the guild meeting the other night and got a nice round of applause. The book is a great book also! Lots of so many interesting journal pages. I will have a lot to read after next week after I have surgery on my right rotator cuff that I tore a few weeks ago. So, no sewing for the summer.

I had originally started a journal like this for the 2007 BJP, but lost interest. However, there are clear instructions here:

Many of these canvases in different sizes are available incredibly cheap at dollar stores, Walmarts and the like. Occassionaly an art supply store will also have them on sale.

English embroidered bookbindings

OH, these are GORGEOUS!!! From Project Gutenberg, this book was originally published in 1899. The pictures obviously are in black and white, but i'm sure a search online would turn up colour photos from museums. There are both descriptions of the books and "how-to's" in the main book. Project Gutenberg itself has a vast compendium of needlework books from every era possible, with subjects from hat making and needlelace to book binding and "fancywork" of all sorts. All are available as free downloads, and most give you a "main site" so you can see what it is before you choose to download.

The photo above(or wherever Blogger put it!) :"The most decorative, and in many ways the finest, of all the remaining embroidered books of the time of Elizabeth is now at the Bodleian Library at Oxford. It is one of the 'Douce' Bibles, printed in London in 1583, and probably bound about the same time. It was the property of the Queen herself, and is bound in crimson velvet, measuring 17 by 12 inches."

I'm exchanging a one on one with someone who has never done this before, and creating a new journal just for myself using experiments with new techniques learned mainly from Fibre and Stitch but elsewhere as well. (Acey, i'm really thinking about those french knots!!)

Two of my pages so far, using Alchemy/Magic as a theme, and varying techniques. (i don't know if they"re above or below or twixt these words as i post this!)

How many of you submitted pages to the 1000 Journal pages project? Anyone but me?
One of my pages was accepted for publication!!!!!
The top photo is the front---wallpaper sample embellished with torn and painted Lutrador, fme stitched and my little pizza foil spaceships, the bottom photo is the back: the wallpaper again with lutrador and angelina, rusted lutrador with text, candy wrappers and foil heavily stitched and fabric applique.

I completed the last three pages and "bound" it together this morning. Whew, only a month and a bit late for her birthday! Trial and error gave me an idea for a future binding--with some bugs worked out :}---but in the end i had to "invent" something else to attach the pages to each other! Each page is postcard sized, give or take, at 4x6 inches.
And who knows what order these photos will go in as Blogger rarely makes sense in the visuals placements!

My Mother's birthday is in 6 days, so i've been working on a postcard sized journal for her. The basis is one photo of her, my favourite, taken when she was 17. It's a creative stretch to come up with different treatments for each page with the same image!

A note about 1000 journal page submissions

If you read the guidelines, and you have sent a jpg of a page you sent to someone in this group, you will notice that if the page you submit is accepted for publication, this means you HAVE TO SEND THE REAL PAGE or on a "High quality/high resolution CD" for photography for the book. If the recipient has already bound their book, this could present a problem! Just a heads-up/thought/warning :} I'm NOT trying to discourage anyone or rain on anybody's parade; i want you all to be aware of this as some of you will be mailing from overseas if accepted! I'd LOVE it if any or all of us "met" there!!!!!!

this one was actually inspired by a quilt that emmy posted in her flickr but I misunderstood her directions rather I didn't see them until I had made up my own idea of how she did it.

So here is how I did it...

I cut 2 pieces of fabric the same size and put iron on interfacing backing on them. Then I layed them on top of each other and used my rotary cutter to cut them into even curcy strips. I think this is where I took a different turn (ha) I layed them all even again and now cut horizontal where I had cut vertial curvey lines.

so now I had a bunch of little puzzle pieces essentially. I ironed them down to a 3rd piece of fabric, as the backing. This method gives me a whole second set of puzzle pieces to create a mirrored version of the same thing. Because of my desired meaning for the piece I wanted the red to show through.

after the pieces were ironed down then I applique stitched down all the edges.

so for the meaning.... this is about war... the red represents the rivers of blood shed, the blue symbolizes hope for ending the war and finally the white is for peace.

I am super happy with this peace peice, and plan to use this method again...but I also plan to try the tutorial that emmy wrote too.

Things have come together magically in the last five hours and Lauralea's page is almost done, front *and* back! The first "cocoon" piece i did, originally intended for Ruth Ellen, fit perfectly into the colour scheme and "flavour", an unintentional bonus, because even though i wanted to use it, i didn't plan the background to accommodate it---serendipity!

I will be posting photos and blogging it when the camera batteries are recharged.

I've learneed and tried so many new things with this anthology, i'm not sure how to do my "cover" for it! Has anyone finished theirs and posted photos?

Cynthia's front of page is done!!!! I loosely interpreted her theme of "Window of the Soul"--she can look through the "window" into the mirrors and see herself, and she can see me as the small needlefelted figure which happily found a home on this page.

I do like the above part though......

What's the first rule of backs and fronts? They must be "read" in one direction.

What's the first rule about orientation in a book? I left the short end as the "spine" edge; if it somehow gets fixed on one long edge, then the back is upside down to the viewer.

I screwed up.

Anyone else willing to share major boo-boo's they never admitted to? :}

Well, i've started it......needlefelting on torn lutrador and felt, with angelina and yarn. I've wired the edge to create a convex shape, have yet to do the other three pieces in the "set" and the body, but i'm getting there :} I think the other butterflies and moths for this page will be more "conventional" in technique.
The Butterfly Gardens here are an incredible spot for tourists and locals to visit----20,000 square feet of lush tropical garden complete with orchids and other gorgeous bloomers, a koi pond, flamingos and a host of fluttering lepidoptera and callopistria and birds of all types------just breath taking!

I've been working on sketches and mock-ups for the last three pages i have left to do for the Anthology swap.
Then i realized when they are done, i won't have any more pages to do that HAVE to be done! What am i gonna do??????????????????????? I'm not sure if i'll create any more journals with grand plans after this--kind of feels like losing someone important :0
Anyone else feeling this? Anyone got big ideas for continuing? I *might* do one for my mother, incorporating old family photos--our family has always been matriarchal, so maybe history should dictate my next move!

Exciting news, I am hoping to finish the last page by tomorrow and then they will all be posted out. Thank you to everyone who has sent me one so far. i have decided to make them into a book to celebrate 2007 being my 30th year on this planet. Hoping to make a front cover that contains images of things that happened in the year of my birth. Thanks everyone this is my first swap and I am loving it.

AAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHH "Officially" you have 22 days left, unofficially the "grace period" gives you until the end of March.
I myself am clipping along, may get them done by end of Feb, but not mailed until into March---have sent off only 2, have 3 on the work table and the remainder percolating in my brain and sketchbook.

“Green Thumb” is a collage of Hand-dyed fabrics and ribbon, with beading and a pocket to hold some seeds from nature. Original Quilt art by Cynthia Gaub

this one was the first that I made for the challenge and is IN the mail on it's way to Sequingirl.. Hope you like it. I have never done this much small beading, but once I started on the flower petals they just kept flowing so I went with it. I dyed the fabrics in a workshop at Art Fiber Fest this past summer.

It shows North Cape ( Nordkapp) and the midnight sun.
I haven't been there, I live in Western Norway, and this is "on the top of Norway".
The sun is made of Angelina, also the sunshine on the sea. Waves is made of white gas. Size 8.5" x 11"

an inspiring exhibition

This weekend I visited the Worcester art museum to view a collection of Louis Bourgeios' fiber art. You can visit my blog for a more complete review of this experience, and a different set of accompanying links. My favorite part of the display was a 36 page fabric art journal that contains fragments of LB's lifelong fabric collection. The pages are very simply constructed from vintage linens and fine-woven cottons; each with a row of button holes in the gutter. This is how they are attached as a group within the book cover; they can also be removed for individual display.

The title of the book is Ode A L'Oubli (ode to forgetfulness). Since I couldn't photograph the exhibit, I am making do with photographs from the keepsake folio I purchased, and some links to other pages that I found online. My very favorite page is pictured here.

Some of the pages are constructed from old linen that bear the artist's initials. All the work is simple and organic in its nature. Occasionally something unexpected blares forth, like a page of sleek black lace or the woven tulle ribbons linked above.

This is another unexpected page that greatly intrigues me. The very straightforward examination of personally meaningful symbols, fabrics, colors and shapes was quite creatively inciting. My fingers itched the whole time I was studying the double row of individual pages mounted upon the wall.

Here's another page to view online and here's a review of this journal, that I found very interesting. It includes a few photos of additional pages. Here's an informative interview with Bourgeois. I was also interested to encounter this selection of work which was inspired, at least in part, by LB's work. If you have a chance to view this collection of work, or one of the other traveling retrospectives, I would recommend taking the time.

I finished the front of Bente's page today. The biggest struggle I had with this page (besides the brightest of the orange fabric) was trying to figure out how to make a "fish net" for the small purple square. I solved it by making the net more 3D than I had anticipated. I think it works.(?)

I'm looking forward to the finishing work on all eight pieces. I still need to determine what should be on the backs - hopefully that inspiration will come soon!

Two More Pages

Still trying to get the Anthology pages finished. These two pages are for Arlee and SequinGirl. I have the fronts of seven of them done (oh happy dance!!!) and I planning on finishing the last one tomorrow. Then I get get to task on figuring out the backs and how to finish the edges. Finally, I'm beginning to feel confident that I will have them all in the mail by the end of the month.

My new scanner is not the best quality apparently: i'll upload a proper photo when the battery is recharged! The black tulle overlay, random sequins and stitching darkened it somewhat but not as much as the scan implies! Can you see the stitched bubbles, scales and "presence" of Monster?

Not sure yet *which* page for whom this will be, maybe the "legends and fairytales" one---thinking of Ogopogo :}--but i love this technique! I painted with Procion MX dyes, melted and tore a piece of Pellon iron-on interfacing, then laid a piece of lutrador i had treated the same way over top. Tentatively titled "paper monsters".

This is DONE! I will not add anymore...

that is my biggest challenge with any of my fabric projects...knowing when to stop and call it done. I am still pretty insecure in my abilities and especially when trading with such a talented bunch of artists! I jest feel like I need to add more, fix this, change that... because it does not match the beauty I see in others' work. But I post pictures and have always had overwhelming praise when I give or share my work so I know I am just being hard on myself.

So this one is about the Seattle Space Needle near where I live and is for Needlepointernc... a needle for a needle lover ;)

I am determined to get these anthology pages done! I need to add some beads/embellishments to these and then figure out what to do with the backs and the edges. So close...

I finished it today, kept it simple and didn't over-analyze! :} The background is a silk that was dyed with indigo in a discrete crackle pattern, but it didn't turn out well so i also overdyed it a brownyishmauve as well, in keeping with the purple theme of the front. I appliqued with a few simple machine stitches another piece that had been discharged and stencilled, cut a pocket in, and pinned on with a vintage floral brooch, a green "snowflake" with one of Acey's beloved turtles. I'm also hoping the signature i put on along the pocket doesn't fade or rub off--you can't even see it in this picture; used a type of pen i've never used before.I hope she likes it!
Best of all, i can MAIL it this week-----in plenty of time!!!!!!!!!

I'm sensing a wee bit of panic from some and am wondering if you'd like to vote on extending the deadline to the end of March for the Anthology pages swap. If we *do* agree on this, we can't extend any more though or it will just get silly :} Thoughts?

EDIT: You can pretend you haven't seen this and be done by the end of February. You can also breathe with relief than the consensus seems to be a Grace Period could extend until the end of MArch, but NO LONGER THAN THAT.

I don't know why the list of contributors is showing only a few names---must have something to do with switching over to Beta.

EDIT: Hmm, seems if you are not Beta yet, you will also have problems posting:

Working on Pages

With the switch to beta.blogger, I thought I'd take this opportunity to check it out and give a little more information on how the journal pages are progressing.

Back in September I sketched by ideas for each of the eight pages that I was going to be creating (here). The eight pages are well on their way! Even though I had planned to be further along, I really am pleased with what I have accomplished and the process I used to get there.

Emmy: The irises and the Steller's Jay were a joy to create. For the sky, stitched various blues on a white background and then over-dyed the whole piece to bring it close to the color in the jay.

Bente: Discovered that what I had designed and the size of the page would be a challenge - everything had to be smaller than I thought! I think I've finally figured out the scale of things.

Acey: I am ready to cut the heart and start working on the background. I also have to prep the pieces that are going to fill the heart.

Sequingirl: I didn't realize this one was so small - it really limits what I do. The music staff hasn't work as well I may switch it out with something else.

Arlee: I finished the background fabric, I was afraid it might clash too much with the journal but it has grown on me. (I still love the little journal - the pages at the top don't show very well but they really make it work.)

LauraLea: I'm happy I got the background done, the "circles" are paper right now and I'm trying to figure out how to attack them.

NeedlepointerNC: The covered bridge and the Courthouse were a bit of a challenge. I'm trying to work out some trees - including one with a pocket!

ShebaduhKitty: I think I got the world as the eye just the right size. I have to work the white area of the eye so it doesn't look so bloodshot but other than that I like the background for this piece.

Stitching tute for binding

This one is easy to follow, with diagrams and i don't see why you couldn't do it wiuth fabric. Use different coloured threads or twine and twangle through or add beads!
